Program:  Holiday Party

Lunch will be a buffet – salad, pasta station, turkey carving station. There will be a cash bar.  Bring cash as they may not take credit cards at the in-room bar.

Desserts – Provided by our Chapter members.  A ‘Pot-Luck’ dessert – attendees are asked to bring and share their holiday specialty treats. This is optional; no one is required to bring anything. It’s meant for homemade goodies, not store-bought desserts.

Gifts

Pirate Gift Exchange – This is optional as well.  Anyone wanting to participate should bring a wrapped, untagged gift (value limit $25.00) to the party.  It’s fun to watch, even if not participating.

GUEST SPEAKERS:  Linda Gordon Hengerer and Eric Flowers

PROGRAM: Domestic Violence: Tales from the Trenches

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. Linda Gordon Hengerer and Eric Flowers will talk about domestic violence from both the agency (SafeSpace) and law enforcement perspectives.

Eric will walk you through what happens when a disturbance call comes in. He’ll answer your questions, such as: What makes a domestic violence call so dangerous for law enforcement? What happens after an arrest is made? How is an abuser punished?

Linda will walk you through the process for a victim. She’ll answer questions such as: What happens to the victim who flees in the middle of the night? What help is available to her from the societal standpoint?

SafeSpace is the only certified domestic violence center on the Treasure Coast. Linda and Eric serve as President and President-Elect, respectively. SafeSpace provides emergency shelter, help with restraining orders, and ongoing tools and training to live a life free of violence.

NOTE: We’re also collecting books to be donated to SafeSpace from anyone who comes to the meeting and wishes to donate new or used books (your own, or others if you’re cleaning out your bookshelves). Women and children of all ages participate in the shelter, so don’t worry about subject matter. Mysteries are most welcome!

Linda G. HengererLinda Gordon Hengerer is the author of the Beach Tea Shop mystery series, and several non-fiction books on football, how to fold fitted sheets, and wine pairings. A New Jersey native transplanted to Florida, she enjoys winters with sun and sand instead of snow and freezing temperatures. She is a board member of Mystery Writers of America-Florida Chapter. Eric FlowersEric S. Flowers (Indian River County Sheriff’s Office) began his career with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in 2003, after being moved to serve his community following the attacks of September 11, 2001. He is a graduate of Sebastian River High School and holds a bachelor of business administration degree from Stetson University, masters of science in criminal justice from the University of Central Florida, and is a fourth year doctoral student of Public Affairs, also at UCF. Eric has served the citizens of Indian River County as a patrol deputy, a field-training officer, S.W.A.T. team and honor guard member, undercover detective, detective sergeant, and now in his current role as the sergeant of public affairs. Eric and his wife Rachel, their one-year-old son, and their entire family live in Indian River County.

PROGRAM: “Stayin’ Alive – How to Keep You, Your Family, and Your Protagonist Safe”

Join our group as Al Hallonquist teaches us situational awareness techniques and how to survive an active shooter. It’s a new world out there, and here are some good tips not only for your characters, but for yourselves and your family members as well.

Al HallonquistAl Hallonquist, who has spoken at Sleuthfest on a few occasions, is also head of security for Sleuthfest. A veteran of over 30 years of government service, he retired from the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department as a Sergeant in 2001. He served as a Platoon Commander for the patrol division, and helped create and managed the Hostage Negotiation Team, as well as the Crime Scene Unit. Prior to joining the PBGPD, he served as the Chief Investigator for the District 19 Medical Examiner, and as a Homicide Detective for the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department. He also served for many years as adjunct faculty for Indian River State College teaching in the Police Academy. He currently owns Security Consults, a company that consults with security agencies and organizations desiring tighter procedures. Al is also a published aerospace historian.

Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at mysteries from the prospective of ace reviewer Oline Cogdill as she explains what we should avoid writing—and discusses with us the finer points of the ethics of reviewing.

Oliine CogdillOline H. Cogdill reviews mystery fiction for Mystery Scene magazine, the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Associated Press, Publishers Weekly, and Tribune Publishing Wire. Her mystery fiction reviews appear in more than 300 publications worldwide. She blogs twice a week at mysteryscenemag.com. She has received the 2013 Raven Award from the Mystery Writers of America, the 1997 Sun Sentinel’s Pettijohn Award, and the 1999 Ellen Nehr Award by the American Crime Writers League.

Oline was a judge for three years for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in the mystery/thriller category.

Learn all about selling your books at craft fairs and festivals. Find out the secrets of making your visit productive, setting up displays, creating signage, developing the right personnel image, offering handouts, and important do’s and don’ts.

Judi CianceFor many years, Judi Ciance wrote articles, short stories, and poetry “just for fun.” Once her husband retired, after thirty years on the Worcester (MA) Police Department, they moved to their house on Cape Cod. She then went to work at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, initially as part of the drug partnership grant and finally as an Assistant Deputy Superintendent, Director of Finance. In between, Judi served as the policy and procedure coordinator, supervised the grant writer, and functioned as a transition team member for the county’s new state-of-the-art correctional facility. After taking early retirement and moving to Florida, she went back to the ‘fun’ writing on a full-time basis. That’s when the Casey Quinby Mystery Series began. Last November (2015) the fourth book in the series, A TALE of TWO LOBSTERS, hit the stands. Judi’s fifth book is scheduled for this October.A Tale of Two Lobsters

DEATH INVESTIGATOR BASICS
Ever hear of a death investigator? He or she works for the medical examiner’s office. At a murder, while the police are in charge of the crime scene, the DI has charge of the body, photographing it, noting the injuries, clothing, jewelry, etc. Learn about proper ways and pitfalls of body identification, how to figure out who was driving when bodies have been moved or thrown out of a vehicle during an accident, the best way to get body core temperature, the importance of asking for blood samples taken at the hospital before the survivors were treated, and other tips that will give your mysteries authenticity. The talk will include handouts.

Award-winning author Elaine Viets’s mysteries span the full range of the genre — hardboiled, cozy, and funny, traditional mysteries. Elaine’s 15th Dead-End Job mystery, THE ART OF MURDER, featuring South Florida private detectives Helen Hawthorne and her husband, Phil Sagemont, debuts as a hardcover in May. She’s also written ten Josie Marcus, Mystery Shopper mysteries. Elaine started writing dark mysteries with the four-book Francesca Vierling newspaper series.

BrainstormElaine took the MedicoLegal Death Investigators Course for forensic professionals at St. Louis University’s School of Medicine. BRAIN STORM, the first book in her new Angela Richman Death Investigator series, will be published in August. In this novel, Elaine returns to her hardboiled roots and draws on her personal experiences as a stroke survivor, as well as her studies in the Death Investigators Course. Elaine is a director-at-large of the Mystery Writers of America and a frequent contributor to Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine as well as anthologies edited by Charlaine Harris and Lawrence Block. A South Central Kentucky native, Maryglenn lives in Nashville with her husband, Tim Warnock, and their Old English Sheepdog, Majordomo Billy Bojangles.
