October 28, 2017 Luncheon Meeting

DATE: October 28, 2017 Florida Chapter, Mystery Writers of America Luncheon Meeting

GUEST SPEAKER: Simone Kelly

PROGRAM: 5 Marketing Secrets to Promote Your Novel

Have a book already self-published, and it hasn’t moved much? Sold to a major publisher, and no one knows about it besides you, family, and a few friends?  Do you have an ‘issue’ with tooting your own horn? Not sure how to build a loyal following? Simone Kelly has your back! She’ll show you how to promote your novel with just five marketing secrets!

Fly on the WallKelly was able to turn her self-published book into an Amazon Bestseller in two categories the day it launched. Two months later, she signed with William Morrow, a Harper Collins Publishing Company.  Her marketing strategy for her self-published fiction book was simple. She used her fans to sell it. From videos, selfies, hashtags, partnerships, and local appearances she was able to develop a cult following. Now, Kelly will share with us some of her secrets on how she did it. Self-published, traditionally published, or hoping to soon-be-published…bring a notebook and get ready to take notes. It’s going to be a fun and interactive workshop!

Speaker:  Novelist Simone Kelly has managed to bring love, dating, mystery, the supernatural and all of her other passions into the all-encompassing realm of storytelling. This includes business, since Kelly used to write books and draw their illustrations as far back as the third grade, when her mother made copies for her to sell in school.

The New Yorker’s playful sense of humor and love of adventure developed throSimone Kellyugh the years to serve her well in international travels to locations like Peru, enlightening experiences as a certified Reiki-Master, and in the demanding pace of being a media personality. Kelly enjoyed stints as a producer, manager, and director with record-breaking startups during the dotcom explosion like theglobe.com, volume.com (HBO), and uproar.com.

June 18, 2016  Florida Chapter Mystery Writers of America Luncheon Meeting

GUEST SPEAKER:  Judi Ciance

PROGRAM: VISUALIZED MERCHANDISING

Learn all about selling your books at craft fairs and festivals. Find out the secrets of making your visit productive, setting up displays, creating signage, developing the right personnel image, offering handouts, and important do’s and don’ts.

Judi CianceFor many years, Judi Ciance wrote articles, short stories, and poetry “just for fun.” Once her husband retired, after thirty years on the Worcester (MA) Police Department, they moved to their house on Cape Cod. She then went to work at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, initially as part of the drug partnership grant and finally as an Assistant Deputy Superintendent, Director of Finance. In between, Judi served as the policy and procedure coordinator, supervised the grant writer, and functioned as a transition team member for the county’s new state-of-the-art correctional facility. After taking early retirement and moving to Florida, she went back to the ‘fun’ writing on a full-time basis. That’s when the Casey Quinby Mystery Series began. Last November (2015) the fourth book in the series, A TALE of TWO LOBSTERS, hit the stands. Judi’s fifth book is scheduled for this October.A Tale of Two Lobsters

DEATH INVESTIGATOR BASICS

GUEST SPEAKER: Emily Krupin, Assistant Editor from Harlequin
Program: “Queries and Pitches: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”
Bonus: Pitch Sessions Following Presentation

How do you grab an editor’s or agent’s attention with a query letter or pitch? What makes them request a full manuscript versus send you a form rejection letter? Worse, what makes them scream and tear their hair out? This month’s speaker will address these questions as well as discuss print and e-book imprints at Harlequin that are open to unagented submissions in the mystery, suspense, and thriller genres. As a bonus, Ms. Krupin will take pitches following her presentation.

Emily KrupinEmily Krupin is the Assistant Editor for Harlequin Romantic Suspense, which justifies her fascination with serial killer stories and other startling scenarios. She works on several lines at Harlequin, from historical to Christian romances, but her home line is the perfect balance of suspense and romance. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College she edited higher education textbooks, which may or may not have contributed to her enthusiastic jump to the thriller genre. Outside of work you can usually find her at the local bookstore, stalking a stranger’s adorable dog on the street, or trying out a new recipe. Follow her on Twitter @EmilyKrupin.

**In order to give a five or ten minute pitch (time to be determined), you must have a completed book-length work of fiction. To be added to the list, send an email to Vicki Landis at bookpainter319@hotmail.com with “Editor Pitch” in the Subject line and your full name in the body of the message.
