JUNE 20, 2015: MYSTERY WRITERS OF AMERICA, FLORIDA CHAPTER, LUNCHEON
Guest Speaker: Carla Norton
Program: “The Whole Truth and Other Fiction”
Carla Norton never dreamed of writing true crime until one story grabbed her and wouldn’t let go. She’ll share the whole truth about how she quit her job as an associate editor in Tokyo to cover a sensational trial in California and write a #1 New York Times bestseller. Later, she turned that true-life victim into the fictional heroine of two novels. She’ll discuss research, psychopaths, expert witnesses, and Stockholm syndrome, while answering questions such as:
• How does crafting fiction differ from writing true crime?
• What are the risks of being sued?
• When do you need a life story agreement?
• Is a conviction necessary? What if the villain walks free?
• How can you use true crime to fuel your fiction?
Carla Norton is a novelist, journalist, and true crime writer. Her debut fiction, THE EDGE OF NORMAL, was internationally released in 2013 and was a Thriller Award finalist in 2014. The sequel, WHAT DOESN’T KILL HER, is coming in June, 2015. Carla has also written two books of true crime, including PERFECT VICTIM, which was put on the reading list for the FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit and became a #1 New York Times bestseller.
