January 19, 2019 Luncheon Meeting

DATE: January 19, 2019 Florida Chapter, Mystery Writers of America Luncheon Meeting

GUEST SPEAKER: Michael J. Carlson

 PROGRAM: Hurting Your Characters

Program: How does a broken rib feel? Can a character really walk on a broken ankle? What are the symptoms of asphyxiation, and how long will your character remain conscious? What really happens to a character in the vacuum of space? The answers may surprise you. Many writers (thankfully) have no experience to the very wounds, injuries, and trauma they must describe from their character’s perspective.

Now, you can finally separate facts from fiction. This talk explores the most common injuries writers inflict on their characters from the character’s point of view. Stop searching obscure medical texts or waiting outside emergency departments to interview trauma victims.

Speaker:Michael J. Carlson writes novels, short stories, and non-fiction reference books. He also maintains an active schedule, giving workshops on writing software, story structure, and accurately writing injures from the character’s point of view. He lives in Melbourne, Florida, with more computers than any sane person should have. For more information, check out mjcarlson.com.  Please note that at the request of the speaker, no photographs of him before, during, or after the meeting are allowed.

GUEST SPEAKER:  Jaime (“Jemmy”) Legagneur

PROGRAM: Podcasting: THE Publicity Platform for Writers

Being interviewed on a podcast can be a great way to gain exposure for your writing. Join award-winning podcaster Jaime (“Jemmy”) Legagneur as she presents advice on how to get booked as a guest on great shows, with tips for making the most out of your interview (including what NOT to do) and a fun interactive session to get out those nerves. Jaime will also explain the growing medium of podcasting and how it can be THE platform for sharing your work. You have a passion for your writing, and no one could be better at telling your stories than YOU. So, hear straight from the “Podcast Girl of South Florida” how to start your own show!

JaimeSpeaker:  Helping people live their true passion is Jaime (“Jemmy”) Legagneur’s mission, and she has found no more powerful tool than podcasting. Soon after starting her marketing company, Flint Stone Media, in 2014, she launched her Curve the Cube podcast with the idea to inspire people to find their passion and do their thing (outside the cubicle!). By interviewing movers and shakers who have already successfully lived their dream or are unapologetically deep in the trenches, she offers real actionable nuggets to inspire others to go from being dreamers to being doers!

Along the journey of producing her flagship show, podcasting has become her own passion, and Jaime works every day toward the goal of making it a full-time focus. To that end, she co-hosts on two other shows, is the organizer of the Palm Beach Podcasters MeetUp group, and is launching her own network, the Flint Stone Media Podcast Network.
