In today’s crowded book market, writing series fiction is the best way for an author to build a successful career. This presentation will address the process of writing a story from start to finish. It will focus on the creative process, plot, place, character, point of view, and other narrative elements. 

SPEAKER:

John Dufresne has written two story collections and six novels, including Louisiana Power & Light, Love Warps the Mind a Little, both New York Times Notable Books of the Year. He’s also written four books on writing, two plays, Liv & Di and Trailerville and has co-written two feature films. His stories have twice been named Best American Mystery Stories. He is a Guggenheim Fellow and teaches creative writing at FIU in Miami.

VIRTUAL PROGRAM: Undercover Drug Investigations 

This presentation will cover aspects of the laws that apply to drug distribution and the names of various street units that enforce the statutes. It will address the impact of social media and how a drug buy develops using both the detective and an informant to make the purchase.

The tools available to detectives during long investigations will be reviewed. These include search and arrest warrants, phone taps, and the “drug kingpin laws.” Also discussed will be the obtaining and placement of a locating device. Writers who wish to have a drug component in their story will obtain a grasp of undercover and long term investigations.

SPEAKER: Ken Dye 

Ken DyeKen started his law enforcement career with the St. Louis County Police Department in 1972.  He served 13 years including 5 years as an undercover narcotics detective.  During this period, he infiltrated major drug organizations and is featured in an episode of the Netflix series “Deep Undercover,” episode 23 or season 2, episode 5. Ken also served as a homicide detective and deputy commander of the Intelligence unit. He took a corporate position in Chicago in 1984 and finished his law enforcement career with the Illinois Criminal Justice Authority as the administrator for the statewide Metropolitan Enforcement Groups and Narcotics Task Forces. Ken has written 4 books involving crimes and stories about cops and bad guys in the St. Louis, MO area.  He is a new member of MWA and looks forward to participating in FMWA events.

PROGRAM:  Editing Improves Everything 

As the ways of publishing a book have expanded and changed, so have the way editors interact with their authors. Authors (Traditional and Indie) demand flexibility in the degree of editing, as well as the methods employed. Using a checklist for corrections helps polish manuscripts without feeling as though you’re untangling a ball of knots. Victoria Landis began editing other authors after spending ten years in a tough critique group, and writers began to ask if she’d edit their work.

Writing for magazines and websites can be rewarding on many levels. It hones your research skills, keeps you writing, broadens your network, and can provide the income to make the dream of full-time writing a reality. In this session, we will cover the basics of writing for the media, including who and how to pitch, common mistakes to avoid, how to best present yourself and your work, and how journalistic writing can benefit your fiction.

Speaker: Daphne Nikolopoulos is an award-winning journalist, novelist, lecturer, and writing instructor. She is editor in chief of Palm Beach Illustrated magazine in Palm Beach, Florida, and editorial director of Palm Beach Media Group, a publisher of lifestyle and custom magazines. Daphne writes historical mysteries and thrillers under the pseudonym D.J. Niko. Her books, including The Tenth Saint, The Riddle of Solomon, The Oracle, and The Judgment, have been published in four languages. Her newest novel, The Firebird, will be published in Germany in April. Her books have been awarded a gold medal for popular fiction in the Florida Book Awards, a national bronze medal for historical fiction in the Independent Publisher Awards, and first place in historical fiction in the Royal Palm Literary Awards. Daphne also teaches writing and literature courses at FAU’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

The Florida Chapter of MWA is pleased to announce that MWA president and international bestselling author Jeffery Deaver will present a FREE writing workshop for FMWA members. Mr. Deaver has given his workshop at various MWA chapters across the country and has received rave reviews for his presentation. He’ll be providing handouts – bring your preferred means of notetaking  (electrical outlets may be limited, so laptop users please come fully charged!)

Space is limited to 50 attendees, so please reserve your spot as soon as possible. As this is a FREE presentation, no need to sign up through the website; however, you MUST send your reservation via email to Harriet Ottenheimer at harriet@ottenheimer.com .
